  • The Art of Salve Making

Have you ever heard of a salve? Think Vicks vapor rub, or tiger bomb. Those are both salves. You typically melt down beeswax and combined an herbal infused oil. The combination slightly hardens, but jelly enough to use when needed. You may add essential oils to assist your body with your purpose of the salve. You can make so many different salves for so many uses. For example our best selling salve is our Mullein Breathe Easy Salve. It works as a lung detox, mucus Expectorant, treats coughs, congestion, bronchitis, earaches (apply outside of the ears), sinus infections, and apply to the bottom of the feet (another way our body detoxes). Other salves we make are pain relief which works amazing for arthritis, carpal tunnel, sore muscles, sciatica, sprains, & more. A first aid is another salve we make which always comes in handy. It's great for cuts, scrapes, burns, sunburns, sprains and even assists the body in repairing broken bones. Salves have been used medically for a very long time, and I would love to share our recipe so you and your family can make it at home. What you will need for salve making: A small pot Glass measuring cup A metal tin or small glass jar 1 ounce organic Beeswax 1 cup infused oil Essential oil (optional) Wooden stir or chopsticks Instructions: Fill the pot 1/4 of the way with water Bring water to a boil Measure 1 ounce beeswax in measuring cup Put measuring cup in the pot (double boiler method) Once beeswax melts add your 1 cup of infused oil (turn temperature down) You don't want to burn the benefits of infused oil Once everything is melted take measuring cup off heat, and let cool for a few minutes. Now add your desired essential oils. Essential oils should be about 2%. Stir essential oils very well with wooden stirrer, and pour into tin or glassware. Let your salve harden then enjoy. ***Please keep in mind*** Not all essential oil are safe for children five and younger. Always do your research. I buy plant therapy essential oils and it's printed on the bottles if they are kid safe. Also be aware some essential oils are harmful to pets! Hope you enjoy the art of salve making as much as I do! ❤️

  • The Dangers of Sunscreen

Photo by RF._.studio: https://www.pexels.com/photo/woman-seated-on-textile-applying-suncsreen-3618606/ Not only are most sunscreens dangerous for humans, it’s also harmful to marine life, lakes, and rivers. Most sunscreens contain Zinc Oxide, and Titanium Dioxide. They are chemical compounds which in research studies have shown they could be harmful to the body. Titanium Dioxide is banned in Europe. Toxins are absorbed through the skin, and enter the bloodstream in less than a minute. All the while you think you are protecting your skin, when in fact you have done the opposite. I have shared research links below indicating heavy metal build up in the body when using these metals frequently. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33520589/ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26963861/ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21830917/ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26316185/ It is so important to know exactly what you are allowing on you and your family. And sometimes that means looking up ingredients one, by one. In the United States there aren't strict regulations on toxic chemicals allowed in your skincare, or food. It is actually quite alarming exactly how much, and what toxins are deemed safe. Europe bans over 1,400 ingredients that have been scientifically proven to cause serious health issues. The FDA only bans 11 in the U.S. Therefore meaning that companies are making two different products for both countries to consume. Hense making it more important than ever to do your own research on what you are using. But good news, there are alternatives! Maybe not the ones on the store shelves with the preservatives that allow a shelf life of 20 years. No, not even the ones that say organic or non gmo on them. There are loopholes for those labels. But there are actual sunscreens that protect the skin, and do not contain chemicals. And ours is one of them! :) We created an herbal infused sunscreen with only 4 ingredients! And they all come from plants! Are you surprised? Our sunscreen contains Raspberry Seed Oil, Avocado Oil, Carrot Seed Essential Oil, and Camellia Leaves. All organic, simple, and safe ingredients. I have been using this formula on myself, and family for years, and it’s amazing! It is actually one of our best sellers! :) Raspberry Seed Oil- This powerhouse is packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that protect the skin from sun damage, free radicals, and even aging. It is a skin cell rejuvenator, and can improve damaged, aged skin. Some studies shows it has an SPF of between 28-50, and up to 8 for UVB rays. Avocado Oil-is high is Vitamin E. Avocado Oil keeps skin hydrated, and protects damages skin with it's polyhrydroxylated fatty alcohols. Carrot Seed Essential Oil is rich in antioxidants. Carrot seed oil is an essential oil rich in antioxidants, Vitamin A, and has antiseptic properties. It has an SPF of around 30. Camellia Leaves- are naturally high in spf. Their leaves are very vibrant, and strong and can stand the test of time against the sunshine. See what all the rave is about! A little goes a long way. It's one of our best sellers! https://www.herbalrootorganics.com/product-page/sunscreen-spf-35

  • The Garden Project

Anyone that knows me knows I like to garden. Even when I lived in a small apartment, I had a mini container garden on my fire escape and would get so excited for the one or two peppers or beans that it would produce. As I moved around from here to there, I always managed to make a little spot where I could grow a little garden. So naturally when it was time to finally start looking for a home to buy, having a garden area was a top priority for me. Little did I know that I would come across this little gem. Close to my family, close to work with 8.5 acres of untouched, undeveloped land!!! I am extremely excited about starting this new chapter and learning more about sustainable gardening as well as sharing this info with anyone else who might be interested in learning. One of my many goals would be to implement a water capture system or rainwater harvesting. Not only does this help to conserve water but is better for the plants as it contains less minerals, salt, and treatment chemicals found in your city water or well that can cause build up in the soil and root systems. I’m also looking into a way to power everything using solar energy, a clean renewable energy source, free from emissions and greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide. I am excited to be able to grow all of our own herbs for the products that we make here at Herbal Root Organics. I will be focusing on organic and sustainable gardening methods for our herbs and produce without the use of industrial chemical fertilizers and pesticides. I'm also hoping to eventually offer on and off premise workshops for local families to learn how to do it for themselves. Not only how to grow these things themselves but also to learn about the different herbs and there uses and ways to incorporate them into their daily lives. Now, I am no stranger to people telling me I'm crazy! I know, i get it, it's going to be a lot! A lot of work, a lot of trial and error, a lot of learning and I'm here for it! We are at the very beginning stages of this journey and invite you all to follow along ....or not ..... either way ...if you need me .... I'll be somewhere in the garden <3 <3 <3

For our infusions we like to use Jojoba & Fractionated Coconut Oil. 👌 Fill the jar all the way to the top to avoid leaving any room for mold to grow. You have to be careful with oil infusions. Keep them in a dark, cool area. Avoid sunlight! 🌚 Shake the infusions daily or whenever you can remember. They are ready to strain and use after about 4-6 weeks. ⏳ The longer, the stronger. Best used before 6 months. Calendula is one of my favorite herbs to work with! If you infuse it in Coconut Oil it will work amazingly as a first aid oil/cream.
